*UPDATED* Porn vs Art Kicks Off Friday

With the site redesign coming up, I’ve decided to do a Porn vs Art post. My team and I have been toying around with the idea for some time but never got around to it. I did something similar a while back but this will be PvA at its fullest.
The creation of an image gallery was put forth as a platform to giving my pals a place to display their art without judgment. My concern is some readers would instantly label the images as porn and wonder if I’m shifting towards skankville.
Well, I’m not. I understand the subtle nuances between porn and erotic art. The images you see on IRE are erotic art taken by real photographers NOT Craig from next door. I’d love to showcase the different levels of erotic art, which is where you come in.
Given the graphic nature of the images the Porn vs Art post will only be accessible via The Hellfire Club beginning this Friday. Log in and give me some feedback folks. Anonymous comments are welcomed.

I received a few emails asking why am I waiting until Friday to kick off the PvA post. Simple. I want to give folks ample time to request their Hellfire passwords and I’m awaiting a copyright license for one of the images. I hope you enjoy. :)

TA I have always believed that the human body is a blank canvas and it’s up to us to turn it into a work of art. Every photo posted on this site IS art not porn, from the poses to the clothing (or lack of lol), so I’ll trust your judgment and look forward to my Art Friday :)

So do I. Porn is so obviously porn. I don’t ascribe to the notion that erotic art is porn with soft lighting and gel film. There’s more depth, more contrast, more thought.

I don't know if the line is well defined as that. Both the words "porn" and "art" have very fuzzy definitions. While the following line was used in relation to porn, it applies equally well to art.
"I can't define it, but I know it when I see it." Are the sunday funnies art? Peanuts made it into the MET as art. I may be mistaken, but I believe it even made it into the louvre. If Charlie Brown doesn't have an honored place in the Smithsonian's art exhibits, it's a crime against art. Are saturday morning cartoons art? Gargoyles and Avatar: The Last Airbender are two great cartoons that, I believe, make it into the category of artistic expressions of certain styles of the human condition. Is Anime art? Go ahead, watch Princess Monoke and tell me that ain't art. Is porn art? That's questionable. I will say that what I see/read here is more than *just* porn. It involves itself in more aspects of the human condition than that which involves the interaction of certain bits and pieces. A good movie involves itself in more than just amusing the audience. So is Fight Club art while Independance Day isn't? Or do Fight Club, Field of Dreams, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Wristcutters: A Love Story, etc simply qualify as better art than Independance Day, Doom, Congo, anything by Michael Bay, etc? Whatever the line is, I'll check out the images for more than the influence on my bits and pieces. Sorry if I went totally in the wrong direction there. I'm a nitpicker with a Bachelor of the Arts in English who someday hopes to be an author. This post was like dangling a steak in front of a tiger. :) |

LOL! WB, you kill me. I agree, both 'porn' and 'art' fuzzy definitions. However, when I open 'Chocolate Sistas' beside David Lace, there's a clear different. o_O The Met has a lot of pop art submissions so finding the Peanuts and other comics there wouldn't warrent a second glance. In fact, Gargoyles and Avatar might end up there as well given a few years. We each have are movable lines and this topic has been debated since the dawn of time. It's not going to be solved here, which is rather disappointing. Ggrr! |

I think that part of the problem with finding that line is that there might just not be one.
Debbie Does Mordor might actually be art, just not very good art that's only good for a moment's *ahem* amusement. This does mean that the only difference between Michael Bay's Deep Impact and the pornographic equivilant, which would also be named Deep Impact, is the size of the budget... Which kind of supports the "there is no line" thought. |
