Sarah Forbes Bonetta Davies was a child born into a royal West African dynasty.
She was orphaned in 1848, when her parents were killed in a slave-hunting war. She was around five years old.
In 1850, Sarah was taken to England and presented to Queen Victoria as a “gift” from the King of Dahomey. She became the queen’s goddaughter and a celebrity known for her extraordinary intelligence.
She spent her life between the British royal household and her homeland in Africa until her death in 1880.

Queen Victoria. One of the most misunderstood queens ever! We love you, Queen Vic!

Cool! I learned something new today. I like how you mix it up on your site Tracy. Actually this reminds me of Abram Petrovich Gannibal's story. Schools need to expand their curriculum in terms of Black history... i mean nowadays kids only know of Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth and perhaps Frederick Douglass.

SM, you have a point. I'm hell on changing that. Our history is far too rich to be defined by hip-hop and hoops.

Thanks Cali. I love these little fact - my head rings with them. I figured I'd pass a few on to you guys. :) School should teach a well-rounded history period, not just during BHM.
